SM ENTERTAINMENT PLAN TO TAKE ACTION AGAINST THAI COVER GROUP MILLENIUM BOY NICKNAMED “EXO-T”

SM Entertainment plans to take action formal against Thai cover group Millenium Boy nicknamed “EXO-T.” EXO’s fans are furious with Millennium Boy’s use of EXO’s name to gain fame and profit in Thailand.

Millennium Boy is a popular cover group consisting of 11 Thai and 1 Korean boys. They started to gain popularity by covering EXO’s choreography and songs and has reached over 90 thousand members in their fan club. Last year, Millennium Boy even won the “2013 KPOP Cover Dance Festival” with EXO’s “Growl.”

With such heated popularity, Millennium Boy appeared on Thai TV and visited events in Indonesia as well. The conflict is that Millennium Boy would use EXO’s team logo, poster, and album design for such events. Moreover, they imitate EXO members’ exact hair styles, outfits, and even small gestures. Their fans call these boys “EXO-T” and feel that they are even better than the “original EXO.”

With such incidents blowing up, EXO’s fans are raged with Millennium Boy’s imitations. Rising complaints led Millennium Boy to explain their situation on their YouTube channel. They stated that, “the income gained through fan meetings is used for the cost of the events. Clothes, bracelets, and hats were sold with the fans’ request and not for any private sales or business purposes.”

SM Entertainment affiliated member stated, “It is an infringement and illegal to be using EXO’s intellectual property rights for profit-gaining activities. We will take formal actions against this happening.”

What are your thoughts on this incident?
